I have always been intrigued by the 1920s. A decade between two of the biggest world wars. There are so many similarities between now and then, such as them coping with the aftermath of a pandemic: Spanish Flu (1920s and Covid19 2020s). I wanted to chose 5 aspects of the 20s that I was not aware of before.
Firstly the Wall Street bombing. We are all aware of the wall street crash but in 1920 there was a bombing on Wall Street where 38 people killed and 100s injured. It was the biggest terror attack America had had at the time and it still remains a mystery today.
The second event I chose was Howard Carters discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb. Before researching into it I had no clue the repercussions that it had on society such as "Tutmania" and influencing Art Deco. My third event was the discovery of insulin which changed the face of medicine in terms of diabetes. My penultimate choice was F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. I always knew it was set in the 1920s but for some reason assumed it was not written then, making it the perfect representation of the time. Lastly I chose the first appearance of Mickey Mouse "Steamboat Willie"; an iconic character which would go on to represent one of the biggest studios to date.
In conclusion I found this activity enlightening. It has also led me to what I want my topic to be for my research project: Howard Carter. I believe he has a lot of potential as a topic and cannot wait to find out more,
