BBC 3 Late Night Show- Visuals

Writer's picture: Ally McEnhillAlly McEnhill

When starting my visuals, I knew I wanted to based them around images of my paper model and then using Illustrator trace the outline of the image. I then planned to add colour to this but I did not know how, which led to me doing a bit of experimentation.

I tried adding colour on Illustrator; however, I struggled with software and feared I would not have enough time. Note to self: learn Illustrator. Anyway due to my lack in technical know how, I wanted to explore physically adding colour through printing it out and then adding colour before scanning the image back in.

I used two different mediums when testing: watercolours and soft pastels. Both gave very different effects. The pastels blended gradients well but it was hard to blend to produce the intended colour whereas the watercolours were easier to produce the intended colour but I found it hard to add depth. As a result of this testing, I decided to try to incorporate both to mediums which I thought created the perfect balance of colour and depth.

Another factor to consider when doing the visuals, was what colour scheme I wanted. Originally I wanted to go for red and greens as I thought they were a classic combo seen in the speakeasies on my mood board but also matched the brick effectively. However, I decided to also experimented with the colours in a peacock feather (another aspect I discovered in my visual research). In the end I decided to go with the peacock feather theme as I thought it matched the glamour of the star cloth but was also refreshing and looked good with silver, gold an brick.
