For this project, we were given the topic of Georgian Collectables to explore and as collectables can be anything really from plates to furniture (anything with a certain degree of decorum). Through group crits we discussed how this label limits us to upper class possessions as back in those days the things that the lower classed people would have been firstly harder to dictate whether they were iconic Georgian or not because they would never have the most stylish items. Secondly, because throughout history the poor have always been seen as downtrodden, less things have survived from the poorer people in comparison to the rich people with the most fashionable items. there possessions are more preserved. I think this was an important realisation early on in the project and I am glad we made it as a group.
So when doing my mood bored, I really wanted to show a broad variety of Georgian Collectables rather than focus on a particular area of collectables as I did not actually know that much about the era. I also tried to use more of the online library databases such as Bridgeman Education. I found this useful for illustrations of the time but had to look elsewhere for actual collectables.
Here are some of the aspects of my mood bard explain further:
Architecture and a dolls house- I thought was quite grand and symmetrical design
Rococo styled mirrors- French originally but it did come over to Britain, also uses a lot of symmetry
Use of side silhouettes were huge at the time
Dukes and duchesses set a lot of the fashion styles at the time and as you can see at the top we have two images one of Georgiana Cavendish (Duchess of Devonshire and an ancestor of Lady Diana Spencer) who was responsible for the fad of the Gainsborough Hat. There is also another image of Kiera Knightley next to it showcasing a similar hat in the film The Duchess where she plays Georgiana Cavendish
Huge hats and wigs were bug at the time and as you can see there's one with the ship on it down at the bottom. For example the image with the wig with a ship on it is from the play Amadeus at the National
Fans were used a lot and the lovers eye which was meant to be your loved one's eye painted and then have pearls around it.
The drapes and very grand symmetrical again
I then went on to develop was the idea of these big hats as well as the rococo style and also surprisingly the silhouette of a shoe. I found the silhouette surprisingly typically Georgian. As this project was about stretching boundaries as to what we perceive as being from that Era not being as from that era, I thought was a very interesting corridor to pursue. The power of a shoe.
