I absolutely loved this movie. It was directed by Emerald Fennel and stars Carey Mulligan as Carrie, a medical student drop out who was seeks revenge for a friend who was raped in college whilst being blackout drunk. It really challenges societies perspective on this issue as it is actually horrifyingly common and hardly spoken about, making it a truly taboo subject in today's society.
The production designer was Michael Perry. When looking at the set design aspects, I absolutely loved Carrie's parents home where she still resided. The interior appears very dated which helps contribute to this idea that Carrie is struggling to move on from what really happened to her friend Nina (stuck in limbo as it were). It also weirdly adds a psychologically disturbing aspect to the character as the set does not align with the very modern sets used elsewhere, such as for the café and woodland cabin. Perhaps this could also refer to the idea that she is one of the only ones that has a truly modern mindset on the issue, whereas everyone else's is very dated.
Colour is also cleverly used throughout. Hints of red in the café could be seen as warnings and the different coloured nail varnish on her fingers draw your attention to them which is important later in the film (no spoilers).
There are also huge links in this film to The Night of the Hunter. Not only is the film visually referenced as a film that Carrie's parents are watching in one of the scenes, but it is also more subtly referred to in the soundtrack. As well as this, I also thought they were some parallels between Carrie and Harry Powell with a particular focus on their hands with Carrie's multi coloured nail polish and Harry's tattooed knuckles.
Lastly, I thought the camera angles were very interesting. For example the sudden zooms when she is on her bed looking at her laptop which add suspense and the just above eye level shot used throughout the scene where she confronts the lawyer, This angle makes both characters feel equal, perhaps as they are both seeking for forgiveness on what happened to Nina.
