British film noir directed by Carol Reed

When first watching the film, weirdly for me, I felt some parallels in plot with Citizen Kane for at the start you have this idea that your exploring the death of a friend and it just happened to be Orson Welles again. However, in contrast the film is completely in a film noir style which is evident throughout. The use of shadows are prominent and add to the dark atmosphere. Another thing though I found very interesting was the use of Dutch camera angles as it made me feel uncomfortable in the scene, but also added an interesting perspective.

Another thing that I found really interesting was how they introduced some of the characters. For example, when introducing the doctor before showing the doctor's face they showed him carving up some meat on a plate. This shift in focus on the meat rather than the person being introduced adds suspense. This same technique is once again used when introducing Orson Well's character where they focused on the cat which then went towards his feet. I felt like this really built suspense and it just made you want to know even more why this person so significant to the plot at hand.

Lastly another key bit that really stood out for to me was the Ferris wheel because I found it really interesting how they used a similar technique to what they would have used backing wise in a car situation. The Ferris wheel allows for one of the key points of that scene to be made which was when Orson Welles' character is looking out the window and he refers to everybody looking like specs and how if a spec was gone than it would not really matter much. This is a very stereotypical of film noir element, having a character embody this bleak perspective on life. The set allowed him to have that outlook be known.
