Model Making 1

In the first session of modelmaking, we all got to grips with the essential equipment needed: the scalpel. I learnt that it was very important to switch the scalpel blades to keep it sharp in order to have high accuracy, but also to prevent it becoming blunt and therefore a hazard. This was very useful for me as I also learnt that I did not actually have the right kind of blade for modelmaking and therefore it allowed me to invest into a more appropriate one.

As well as finding out about the equipment, we also went on to learn about the basic skills required in modelmaking. The session used two materials: mountboard and foamboard. We first experimented with using mountboard to make 1:25 scaled platforms for stage designs. We were given the dimensions and we were instructed to cut out the faces and assemble them using wood glue. I did not have any wood glue so instead used PVA which was effective; however took far too long to dry. Next time I would invest in some wood glue. Another factor we had to consider when cutting out the faces was the thickness of the mount board. In order to deal with this I trimmed the faces accordingly.

Lastly, we were told to explore making just random shapes using foam board and then attaching them in a experimental way using bobby pins. I found the bobby pins technique so useful for anything from experimentation to holding foam board in place when gluing. Overall I really enjoyed modelmaking, this session really excited me for what was to come and the new skills that we were going to learn.
