In the third session of modelmaking, we began to explore textures of walls and how you could use different materials in order to produce these effects. Before going into how we could do these effects, we were told about the importance of doing the research into bricklaying and stone paving before modelmaking. Brick varies wherever you are for example the brick Cornwall versus brick in Yorkshire is very very different. It is important to know your research before designing or making.
So when starting to actually experiment with different textures we first did a brick wall. We used a pre-printed pattern and then cut each brick accordingly out of foamboard. It took a while to cut each individual brick; however, I also found it very therapeutic. Having cut the bricks, I then glued them in a brick pattern to a piece of card. We were then advised to peel back various parts of the brick to give more texturally variety. I also then layered over it Polyfilla to give a partially plastered wall/ brick erosion effect. This was so much fun and I just loved the effect, the textured layering made it look more realistic and therefore effective. I would definitely use this technique in future modelmaking.
We then went on to randomly cut out shapes in card and stick it once again to some foam board. The aim of this exercise was to try and replicate natural crazy stone paving. I thought it was quite effective and through layering Polyfilla on the top it once again made it look rougher and more realistic. I had never used Polyfilla before this class but can now not imagine model making without it as it to adds an extra level of authenticity.
